Prince Valiant PDF + PALADIN
almost 7 years ago – Tue, Jul 11, 2017 at 01:40:51 AM

Happy Monday!

This morning we are going to start distributing the Prince Valiant PDF (just the core rule book) through BackerKit to you!

You'll receive a DriveThruRPG link for a discounted copy of the PDF (discounted to $0 of course). Click that link to redeem your PDF copy, and check out through DriveThru, and enjoy!

We're moving ahead on the scenario book as I type this, so we'll update you on timelines and dates for that as we get more information. All the scenarios are in (we're double checking), but editing is underway on them.

PALADIN

The next project Nocturnal Media had been planning on running was Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne, an adaptation of the legends of Charlemagne and his Paladins to the King Arthur Pendragon rule-set.

Stewart was excited and passionate about this project and Nocturnal Media is happy to announce that we are going to be launching a Kickstarter for Paladin on July 18th (next Tuesday).

The core book is over 650 pages and is a stunning adaptation (both in mechanics, theme, and art), and we couldn't be happier showing it to you here.

We hope you'll join us on this next step!

Update
almost 7 years ago – Tue, Jul 04, 2017 at 01:16:23 AM

Hi folks,

I'm Alan Bahr, Associate Producer at Nocturnal Media. At this point, I'm sure you've all heard the terrible news about Stewart's passing. I can't imagine how hard it's been on everyone (I can only speak for myself), but now comes the point where we have to push forward, past the pain, sorrow, and confusion, and this update is the first step down that road. I'm popping in to make sure you know a few things.

The first being that someone from Nocturnal is here and we're not ignoring this Kickstarter.

Secondly, Steve Wieck (Stewart's brother) and I are sorting out the various Nocturnal projects that are outstanding (this is one), and we're figuring out what we need to do to keep things moving.

Expect a detailed plan of action in the near weeks (likely early next week, maybe a little later). Our every intention is to fulfill the outstanding Kickstarters, but our plans to do so might require some re-calibration before we proceed. Quick note: The PDF of this game should be out very soon.

If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to me at my email: [email protected], and I'll do what I can to help.

Be aware, at this point, anything more concrete than "We're making plans, decisions and figuring out how to move forward" is unlikely, so please be patient with us.

Progress Report
almost 7 years ago – Fri, May 26, 2017 at 01:02:08 AM

Things are both in motion and at standstill with Prince Valiant The Storytelling Game. The revised core game is ready for layout but a project and half are ahead of the game in the queue, so layout will not be completed until mid-June. We’ll release the PDF immediately and then get the book to press.

I’m sorry this has run late, but the delay did at least give us time to get our hands on even more bonus scenarios.

I will send updates at least every two weeks to keep you appraised of progress to the finish line.

Stretch Goal Scenarios

I’m pleased to present a very impressive list of thirty-three new “episodes”. In all, this is well over 30,000 additional words of bonus material, with entries from 500 words all the way up to close to 3000. Because this is SO MUCH material, we’re going to print it as a second book instead of adding these to the episodes in the core book. Another 30k words added to the 70k word rulebook transforms what’s intended to look like an easy-to-learn and use introductory roleplaying game into something too substantial.

This will be a bit more expensive as it always costs more to print two shorter books than one larger book of the same total page count, but it will be both more in the spirit of the game and also probably easier for you to use at the game table.

Without further ado, here’s the list of brand-new episodes (alphabetical by author) that will now be featured in a standalone book. We've added a few authors to replace some pieces we didn't receive. A couple more may yet trickle in and we’ll add those if we’re able; otherwise, they might be digital-only bonuses for you. There’s a tremendous variety here, both in form and content. Some offer very traditional medieval type fare, while others push to the exotic that you also find in the Prince Valiant comic strips.

The Moods of the Mad King

One of the authors newly added to the above list is Alan Bahr, a KS project creator himself who delivered his first two projects *early* and a third is on track for on-time. He now has a new project that will surely appeal to fans of Prince Valiant. The Moods of the Mad King is a 15-minute micro-game for 2 to 4 players, where the players assume the role of a playwright in the court of The Mad King! The Mad King demands a play to suit his current feelings, but with his ever-changing moods and propensity for beheadings, all the playwrights are stealing secrets from each other and scrambling to gather information from those close to the king in order to create the perfect play!

The project is entering its final week, so please take a look!

Brief Update and Quick Reminder
about 7 years ago – Sun, Mar 05, 2017 at 10:18:32 PM

Brief Update

This past week we received the last of the stretch goal scenarios that I believe will make it into the book, so we're entering final editing for all of this late-arriving material.

A couple more scenarios remain outstanding and they may yet arrive, in which case I'll have to see how quickly and easily they can be incorporated into the process, but in expectation of coming a bit short of material due to contributor scheduling conflicts, I did add Tobie Abad (author of A Single Moment) to the list of stretch goal authors.

So, obviously you didn't receive the Prince Valiant The Storytelling Game PDF in February, but it should land in March.

A Quick Reminder

We're in the final hours for the project to fund an Arthurian Library. Your support has been amazing! We've unlocked:

  • bonus sidebar commentary from Arthurian scholar John Matthews
  • upgraded the softcover graphic novel to hardcover
  • interior illustrations in The Arthurian Concordance
  • a bonus PDF with King Arthur Pendragon commentary by Greg Stafford
  • sewn-in bookmarks
  • printed endpapers
  • bonus illustrations in the graphic novel

Happy Birthday to Greg Stafford!
about 7 years ago – Thu, Feb 09, 2017 at 11:42:01 PM

Today is Greg Stafford's birthday, and especially considering that this project continues to run late, I thought I'd offer a King Arthur Pendragon bonus to celebrate and reward your patience. Through tomorrow 2/10, the KAP supplement Book of Knights & Ladies is available to you FREE. Use these link options for your 100% discount coupon!

Project Update

The project itself continues to move along, though things were delayed a couple weeks by an ill-timed (as far as the project is concerned!) Chinese New Year during which the printer effectively shut down. So KAP 5.2 and the KAP dice that are there entering production have not moved along in the process and some templates needed for Prince Valiant are only now being provided.

Also, the Prince Valiant coins will go to production at Campaign Coins next week!

From Birthdays to Le Morte

As you're a fan of things Arthurian, I hope you'll consider supporting our new Kickstarter project! I just launched a project to fund a new deluxe edition of Sir Thomas Malory's classic Le Morte d'Arthur. This edition is edited by Arthurian scholar John Matthews and it will include comments by both John and Greg Stafford! (Which makes today a great launch day!)

The project is actually for a three-book Arthurian Library that also includes a graphic novel adaptation of Le More d'Arthur scripted by John Matthews and illustrated by the husband/wife team Tom and Nimue Brown plus a new edition of the much-loved King Arthur Companion by Phyllis Ann Karr that's now called The Arthurian Concordance.

Both the text edition of Le Morte d'Arthur and The Arthurian Concordance feature stunning original cover art by Natee Puttapipat.
